Jeffrey Amer 

Ever since stumbling across an article about Mussar 13 years ago, Jeffrey Amer has been “all in”.  After several years of self-study, and then several courses with The Mussar Institute, Jeffrey has completed Manchim, advanced training for Mussar facilitators, and has been a facilitator for the last two years.  He is currently a participant in Rav Nussbaum’s Va’ad for advanced Mussar learning. Jeffrey is an observant practicing Conservative Jew, a pediatrician, and a passionate amateur woodworker

Robert Barris

Robert is a practicing psychiatrist since 1984. He is shomer Shabbat and integrates Orthodox practice with Jewish renewal. Robert has had a serious mindfulness practice for many years.  He has been active in TMI for the past ten years, as a former Board member and as the facilitator of several TMI distance va’adim. Robert partnered with Alan in revamping the Mussar in Action curriculum, serving as the translator into English of various selections from the Alei Shur, the writings of Rav Wolbe. Robert’s interests include lifestyle medicine (particularly nutrition and exercise), the martial arts, and playing with his grandchildren.

Steven Chervin

A Jewish educator for nearly 40 years, Steve has taught adult education classes (Florence Melton School of Adult Jewish Learning) for 20 years, in addition to serving as Director of Jewish Continuity for the Atlanta Jewish Federation, directing the School and Professional Services department for the Boston Bureau of Jewish Education, directing a Solomon Schechter Day School and synagogue religious school, and teaching Jewish studies at Emory University and day schools in Atlanta. He has been practicing and teaching Mussar for more than ten years, graduating from The Mussar Institute’s Manchim program.  Mussar has added a deeply spiritual aspect to his Jewish identity.  Steve earned a B.A. in Psychology from Columbia University, an Ed. M. in Developmental Psychology from Harvard University, and an Ed. D. in Teacher Education from Stanford University, in addition to studying as a Senior Educator for a year at The Hebrew University in Jerusalem.

Shelley Karrel

Shelley is a Registered Clinical Counselor who has been a counselor and coach for the past 25 years. She has been facilitating Seasons of Mussar for the past 10 years. Shelley enjoys working with all ages and life stages, particularly seniors. She has additional training and experience facilitating courses in spirituality and leadership development. A student and facilitator of The Mussar Institute courses, she values the Mussar practice, which helps us to remember who we are, at the core.

Judith Edelstein

Rabbi Judith Edelstein, Doctor of Ministry, learned about the Mussar Movement while in seminary.  She went on to participate in a va’ad that was being offered at her local synagogue about 10 years ago.  The methodology combined with the study appealed to and transformed her.  After TMI Manchim training, Rabbi Edelstein facilitated a variety of Mussar groups through different modalities: face-to-face, phone, and zoom.  She also coordinated the first two TMI Practice Retreats.

Harvey Winokur

Rabbi Winokur is a native of New York. He received his B.A. at the SUNY at Buffalo, and his M.A. and Ordination at the Hebrew Union College-Jewish Institute of Religion in Cincinnati, Ohio. He is Rabbi Emeritus of Temple Kehillat Chaim, a Reform congregation in Roswell, Georgia, which he founded in 1982. Rabbi Winokur is a Facilitator/Trainer for Prepare-Enrich, an organization which administers premarital/marital needs assessments, a certified Spiritual Director and a Trainer/Facilitator for The Mussar Institute.
