Sandra Lief Garrett

Sandra Lief Garrett, President of the Board of The Mussar Institute, is a program and resource development consultant to nonprofit organizations. She comes to the role following a four-decade career in leadership positions in the public and nonprofit sectors in which she focused on helping women, children, new immigrants and refugees succeed. She has studied and practiced Mussar since 2011, and joined the Board in 2012. She is honored to work with the Board and staff on the expansion of The Mussar Institute to enable more individuals, organizations and communities to experience this life-changing Jewish spiritual path.

Roann Altman

For 40 years, Roann Altman has been an instructor of professional writing and speaking skills to non-native English speakers. She now helps nonprofit organizations disseminate spiritual teachings. Roann began studying Mussar in 2006 and has been facilitating courses in Ann Arbor, Mich., since 2007. A Board Member since 2008, she leads the program team for The Mussar Institute’s annual Kallah (retreat) and helps TMI clearly communicate its message.

Daniel Beaupain

Daniel currently practices as a legal guardian/trustee, after decades of being active as a management consultant. He is a gabbai, teacher and board member at the Liberal Jewish Congregation of Amsterdam. Daniel is one of two Mussar facilitators and leaders outside the U.S. and supports or facilitates three Mussar va’adim in the Netherlands and one in Germany. He has been participating in a multinational va’ad since 2005, has been principal teacher of the Mussar Institute Europe since its founding and has translated “Everyday Holiness” into Dutch.

Ken Birenbaum

Ken Birenbaum, Treasurer and Executive Committee member, has also served as President of Congregation Shaare Emeth in St. Louis, and on the boards of the Union For Reform Judaism, and the Saul Mirowitz Jewish Day School. He has been a student of Mussar since 2008, and a certified Mussar Facilitator since 2012. Ken regularly attends Torah study, and is grateful to his wonderful Mussar groups and study partners over the years.

Barry Block

Barry Block is the rabbi of Congregation B’nai Israel in Little Rock. After taking “Everyday Holiness” online, Barry received Manchim training and has led va’adim in two congregations. As a Board member since 2014, Barry’s particular interest is in spreading Mussar engagement by inviting rabbinic colleagues and other synagogue professionals to become students, practitioners, and teachers of Mussar.

Matthew Blumberg

Matthew Blumberg is a social entrepreneur living in Cambridge, Mass., designing tools and systems for distributed computing and collective problem-solving. He has studied Mussar for more than 10 years, led groups merging creative writing and Mussar practice, and has served on the TMI board since 2014.

Sandy Greenstein

Sandy has more than 30 years of experience in manufacturing, construction, and risk management-loss control. He lives in beautiful Thousand Oaks, Calif.
Sandy feels it’s an honor and privilege to associate with so many wonderful people who have a similar approach to want to live in a better world. He believes strongly in Mussar’s path of Jewish character development and spiritual growth leading to awareness, wisdom and transformation. As a member of the board, he has an opportunity to work to bring the study and practice to Mussar to others. He believes that by practicing Mussar and as a Mussar Facilitator, he has helped close the gap between his ideals and the life he actually leads.

Cyndee Levy

Cyndee Levy is the Director of the Center for Jewish Learning at the Jewish Federation of St. Louis. In addition to her administrative role, she teaches classes throughout the community. She also serves as the Florence Melton Adult Mini-School Director for the community. Cyndee was honored by her peers in St. Louis with the 2009 JProStl Educator Award. A student of Mussar for the past 10 years and a graduate of The Mussar Institute’s Manchim training program for facilitators, she is now facilitating Mussar classes in St. Louis. Cyndee joined the TMI board in 2015. She has been contributing to the work of the TMI in a variety of areas related to programming.

Bonnie Pastor

Bonnie Pastor is an estate planning attorney in Los Angeles, Calif., and a new member of the Board. She facilitates Season of Mussar groups, is a Co-Chair of the TMI International Team and a member of the Social Justice Va’ad. Over the last seven years, she has enjoyed and benefited greatly from participating in a number of TMI classes, practice retreats and kallot.

Irv Robinson

Irv Robinson recently sold his plastics manufacturing business of 45 years. He has served in various leadership and non-leadership roles in Kansas City-area nonprofit organizations. Irv has been studying Mussar since 2009, has facilitated courses since 2012 and has served on the TMI Board for several years.

Pam Rollins

Pam Rollins of Dallas, Texas, is an Associate Professor at the University of Texas-Dallas. Over the last 35 years, her research, teaching, and clinical experience have all been dedicated to understanding, identifying, and treating children on the Autism Spectrum. She has been practicing Mussar and facilitating TMI courses at Temple Emanu-El of Dallas, a URJ congregation, since 2009. Mussar has helped her be her best self, so she is honored to give back to TMI as a board member.

Gary Shaffer

Gary Shaffer is an attorney with a mediation practice in Brooklyn, N.Y. He has been practicing Mussar since 2004 and been a board member of The Mussar Institute since its inception. He was President of TMI from 2010-2014. He has been leading Mussar groups at Congregation Beth Elohim in Brooklyn since 2007 and at the Manhattan JCC since 2014. He has given talks on Mussar and Mediation to lawyers and non-lawyers.
