The Mussar Institute (TMI) advances the study and practice of Mussar, a Jewish path of character development and spiritual growth leading to awareness, wisdom, and transformation. Through experiential online and in-person courses based on classic and contemporary sources, The Mussar Institute inspires individuals, organizations, and communities around the world, regardless of affiliation, to align heart and mind with the highest ideals of the Jewish tradition.
The Mussar Institute was founded in 2004, by Dr. Alan Morinis, to organize a response for requests for courses and facilitator training in Mussar teachings and practices. Over the years, courses have been developed by Mussar experts to support the spiritual paths of everyday people and those who were able to and interested in facilitating Mussar va’adim or small groups, which are at the heart of Mussar practice.
Today, TMI offers courses at all levels of Mussar expertise and knowledge; training for facilitators, rabbis, and clergy in Mussar facilitation; programs and curricula for organizations and congregations; as well as resources and community for all.
In 14 years, The Mussar Institute has grown from a group of volunteers to a growing, non-profit organization, directed by professionals who work closely with a community of volunteers. The goal they share is to provide the highest-quality Mussar instruction, support, and experience to Mussar practitioners worldwide, so that souls who desire to participate in a va’ad and learn can do so, wherever in the world they may live.
The Mussar Institute is led by:
- Steven Kraus, Executive Director
- Avi Fertig, Director of Mussar
- Jeff Agron, Director of Operations
