Manchim — Training for Mussar Group Leaders

Be a guide and facilitator to others as they walk their spiritual paths, and grow your own soul in the process.

As more Mussar groups emerge in many places, and as the call for leadership of these groups increases, training capable group facilitators is essential.

The Mussar Institute’s Manchim Program to train Mussar group leaders prepares qualified candidates to guide a va'ad (Mussar group) and to lead The Mussar Institute's A Season of Mussar course  and other advanced courses. In this sensitive leadership role, the facilitator helps members of his or her own community engage in personal development and growth through Mussar learning and practice.

The Mussar Institute’s Manchim Program to train Mussar group leaders focuses on the development of the values, skills, and characteristics needed to facilitate small study groups specifically in the ways and traditions of Mussar.

The training takes place in two phases:

  1. An intensive interactive 3-week internet and telephone based training on subjects related to facilitation skills and issues, tools and techniques, especially emphasizing those that are unique to Mussar groups. This training focuses on imparting skills and perspectives needed to facilitate a Mussar group. It will also guide trainees in how to use the va'ad process to foster their own spiritual growth.

  2. A six month follow-up period during which the trainee will lead a first group. Trainees will continue to study with their learning partner and to interact with their support group during this phase. Reports will be submitted to The Mussar Institute to help identify areas needing to be strengthened. Personal coaching will also be available on an as-needed basis.

Alan Morinis and Judith Zaruches co-direct the program with administrative leadership from Shoshana Litman. Trainees also are assisted by experienced va'ad facilitators who will share their experience, insights and coaching as part of this training program.

Training sessions in October of each year. The fee for the program (the 3-week phase and the subsequent support phase) and all materials is $290.00 payable upon acceptance of the trainee’s application.

"I have been desperately seeking a group of Jews who are hungry to work for a connection with G-d. Thank you for assisting others to connect with their own small voice."
