Mussar and Connection – Lifting the Veils

The theme of this year’s Mussar Kallah last month was “Lifting the Barriers to Relationship,” the notion for which came from a chapter of a small book Maimonides wrote called “Eight Chapters” (“Shmoneh Perakim”). Chapter 7 is called “On the Veils and the Their Meaning.” We decided that the word “veils” is a loaded word in English, so we switched to a term that carriers the same sense of separation without the added meanings, which is “barriers.”

Ignoring That Voice Who Says ‘I’m Too Busy Right Now’

Committed to re-engaging your Mussar practice? Or perhaps you’re new to the discipline and are curious enough that you want to start a practice. One of the most powerful messages I got from last month’s Mussar Kallah VI in New York was this: That voice you hear when you’re about to take the first step in your Mussar practice, that voice who says: “I’ll get to it as soon as I finish that major project I’m working on.” Or, “It’s next on my list. It really is, but let’s face it, I’m just too busy right now. As soon as things settle down in my life.” Or, “Of course I want to do it, but I can’t do everything.”

Practicing Mussar To Plan a Mussar Kallah

Your mission, should you agree to accept it: take the lead in planning the logistics for the Sixth Annual Mussar Kallah. Your goals are twofold: First, make sure the Kallah comes off, when and where as advertised. Second, personally engage every middah in the Mussar repertoire. Faith, humility, generosity, patience, anger, order, gratitude, truth, forgiveness, zeal, and strength will be your constant companions. In varying degrees of course.
