Counting the Omer with Julie August
Day 23 — Faith in the Sages
Emunat Chochomim • אמונת חכמים
By Rabbi Yaacov Haber, Ramat Beit Shemesh, Israel
“The Nation of Israel believed in G-d and in Moses His servant.” (Shemot 14:31)
God is infinite and His wisdom is infinite. We, as humans, are finite and our wisdom and strength are finite.
If only we were able to access infinity! If only we were able to transcend our limitations and all of our boundaries! If only we were able to think and perform beyond the capabilities of our bodies and minds! Our lives would become magical; our capabilities would be extraordinary; our relationships supernatural.
As the Jewish people observed Moses and listened to his words they implicitly understood that they were absorbing infinity. In the world above nature, seas can be split and nature itself can be transcended.
By believing in the words of Moses, we became vessels of Gods own spirit. Moses was the conduit from the infinite well from which he drew, delivering to the very limited world in which we live.
Here is one of the infinite messages of Moses:
וְיָרַדְתִּי וְדִבַּרְתִּי עִמְּךָ שָׁם וְאָצַלְתִּי מִן הָרוּחַ אֲשֶׁר עָלֶיךָ וְשַׂמְתִּי עֲלֵיהֶם וְנָשְׂאוּ אִתְּךָ בְּמַשָּׂא הָעָם וְלֹא תִשָּׂא אַתָּה לְבַדֶּךָ.
I will come down and talk to you there. I will take some of the Spirit that is upon you, and I will put the Spirit upon them also. They will bear the burden of the people along with you, so you will not have to carry it alone. (Bamidbar 11:17)
In every generation, in every time, there will be those that can bring the infinite into our lives. Humble yourselves and believe in their words and your life will be magic.
