Omer 2026 Program
Wise to the Words: Transforming Ourselves Through Speech
April 1st - May 21st, 2026
This program is free and open to all
Welcome to our 2026 Omer journey,
The days between Passover and Shavuot invite us into sacred work. As we count each day of the Omer, we prepare ourselves inwardly to receive Torah anew. The Mussar tradition teaches that this preparation takes place through steady attention to our middot, our inner traits.
This year, we will turn our focus to speech.
“Death and life are in the hand of the tongue,” teaches the Book of Proverbs. While not every word carries such weight, our speech shapes our relationships, our communities, and our own inner lives. Through mindful practice, speech becomes a pathway for refinement of the soul.
A 49-Day Mussar Practice
Our theme draws from Pirkei Avot 5:9, which describes seven characteristics of the wise person:
Seven qualities typify the wise:
• They do not speak in the presence of one wiser than themselves — silence
• They do not interrupt the words of others — honor
• They do not reply in haste — patience
• They ask what is relevant and answer to the point — simplicity
• They speak in orderly sequence — order
• Of what they have not heard, they say, “I have not heard” — humility
• They admit to the truth — truth
Over seven weeks, we will explore each of these middot as lived expressions of wisdom in speech. The work is practical and reflective. We will notice our habits, practice restraint where needed, cultivate clarity, and strengthen our commitment to truth.
The Omer offers a container for steady growth. One day at a time. One quality at a time.
