Embodying Your Mussar Practice With Heart in Mind

with heart in mind

Level: Advanced Small Group

Recommended Experience: Two Years of Mussar Studies

Format: Weekly or bi-weekly 90-minute va'ad meetings, chevruta optional.

Course Overview:

For advanced Mussar students who are comfortable with flexible va'ad facilitation styles, this new course, ideated and initiated by TMI Mussar facilitators, Ken Birenbaum and Mark Edelstein, allows participants to jump in and out of study on a monthly or quarterly basis. The course follows the 48 chapters in With Heart in Mind by Alan Morinis. The emphasis of both va'ad and chevruta sessions will be on HOW participants are embodying, that is living out and experiencing, their Mussar practice, each week. Weekly kavannah (intention) is brought in for accountability, as well as the encouragement of a daily journaling practice (cheshbon ha'nefesh - accounting of the soul). Participants are also encouraged to share creative kabbalot (personal practices) for the unique set of 48 middot that are included in Alan's text, such as attentive listening and orderly speech, fear and awe, slowness to anger and goodheartedness, loving God and God's creatures, bearing the burden with the other, leading others to truth, learning in order to teach and do, and many more.

Advanced students who desire to move from text-heavy Mussar study to daily guided Mussar practice with a nuanced set of middot will find this course challenging and enriching in its focus on diligent practice and group accountability. Groups may focus on each chapter, or middah within, for 1 or 2 weeks at a time, making this a flexible subscription course that allows participants to focus on what as most relevance to their lives.

Participants must purchase their own copy of With Heart in Mind by Alan Morinis. Some facilitators may add supplemental materials.
